Publication Date: 30/05/2023

Cranfield, UK, 30th May 2023, Written by Kelly Patrick –

In this monthly news round up, I am providing some of the latest news and developments impacting the clinical care markets that caught my eye in recent weeks, including my thoughts on the implications for the market.

1.     Draeger gets 510k Clearance for Evita and Babylog Solutions

Draeger Medical North America has gained FDA approval for its updated Evita V800 and Evita V600 solutions for use in critical care ventilation, and its Babylog VN800 and Babylog VN600 solutions for use in neonatal ventilation. Despite being available in other international markets, the new updated ventilators had taken some time to receive FDA approval due to software glitches in previous versions. The newer solutions focus on providing high-end ventilation modes with simpler interfaces. The solutions also cater to a wider patient demographic enabling non-invasive, invasive and high-flow oxygen therapy. Despite leading the neonatal ventilator market in the North American region, Draeger Medical is ranked third in the High-End critical care market. The new approval will enhance its current offering to enable the company to go head-to-head with advanced solutions from Medtronic and Getinge (ranked number 1 and 2 in the North American High-End critical care market according to Signify Research’s new Ventilator report).

2.     Philips Launches Visual Patient Avatar

Philips has updated its IntelliVue MX product range to include a new Visual Patient Avatar. Developed by Anaesthetists, Philips claims that Visual Patient Avatar will provide a clear snapshot of patient information to highlight critical changes by using colour, shape and animation. The solution aims to reduce situational errors by improving data provision in the peripheral view of the anaesthetists. By highlighting patient changes in a simple diagram, it is hoped that the solution will alert the anaesthetists to make necessary adjustments before the monitor’s alarm. The Visual Patient Avatar is an optional extra that facilities can choose to help provide further support to their overstretched OR facilities. Simple in design, it will be interesting to hear the market’s opinion on how useful the summary of patient data will be in the OR space and whether this is meeting the demand for overworked anaesthetists.

3.     PaceMate and AliveCor join Forces

PaceMate announced its collaboration with AliveCor to integrate AliveCor’s KardiaPro platform into PaceMate’s PaceMateLIVE™ cardiac remote monitoring platform. It is hoped that the collaboration will combine the strengths of both cardiac monitoring providers by combining data from clinical and consumer-based wearable solutions across the care continuum. The PaceMateLIVE™ platform will be the first solution to be able to combine consumer monitoring data, ambulatory event monitoring, vital heart conditions, and implantable device data onto one solution, providing a comprehensive overview of heart health with the overall aim to improve clinical efficiency. This marks another of AliveCor’s significant efforts to collaborate with existing cardiac vendors and highlights the interest in consumer-based cardiac monitoring in the wider cardiac space. Signify Research discussed some of these developments last year in its insight AliveCor – Turning Up The Heat in Diagnostic Cardiology

4.     Samsung gets FDA approval for Irregular Heart-Beat app

Samsung has announced that its Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification feature that is part of the Samsung Health Monitor App has received FDA approval. The App is available on the Galaxy Watch and can alert its users to changes in heart rhythm that are suggestive of atrial fibrillation (AFib). The feature is an enhancement to its existing on-demand Electrocardiogram function which monitors heart rhythms suggestive of AFib. The Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification feature will be available on the update to the One UI 5 watch on Galaxy watches and will be expanded to previous editions soon. Signify Research discussed the development of the Ambulatory Cardiology market in its insight The Quickening Pulse of the Ambulatory Diagnostic Cardiology Market, and will be continuing to explore the convergence of wearable consumable devices with clinical grade ambulatory solutions in its Diagnostic Cardiology report coverage.

5.     Simplicity and Intuitive Solutions – The Hot Topics at AACN and NTI 2023

Signify Research’ clinical care analysts recently attended the American Thoracic Society (ATS) International Conference and the NTI 2023. Both shows were well attended and exhibits were inundated with healthcare professionals looking for the new innovations coming to the market. Although the shows were light on new product announcements, vendors were able to demonstrate their technological features that enhanced clinical and operational workflow at the in-person event. The buzz topics on the exhibit floor included clinical efficiency and workflow, with many solutions looking to streamline processes with simpler and intuitive dashboards. As the healthcare industry is really feeling the pressures of the overworked and under-staffed healthcare facilities, solutions that can reduce the need for complex training and show continuity between devices are most in demand. Connected solutions and meaningful data aggregation are the mainstay trends, but the most important step will be maximising the opportunity to provide data-driven clinical support to improve patient outcomes are reduce unnecessary errors. Signify Research will be providing further insight into its thoughts on the topics prevalent at the show in its upcoming show briefs.

6.     EuroAnaesthesia 2023 (ESAIC) – Signify Research is Attending!
